Study Abroad Funding

There are many sources of funding for study abroad, including grants and scholarships funded by Carnegie Mellon, private and government entities, and specific study abroad programs. Browse the various options to find the one that works best for you.

  1. Start Early: Most programs expect that students will apply a semester or year in advance of studying abroad.
  2. Think Broadly: Students might be able to access funding targeted to specific academic majors. Others may wish to study in less traveled parts of the world.

  3. Do Research: It may take some searching before finding the right funding source.

  4. Target the Application: Know the goals and interests of the funding agency when applying, and target the application specifically to them. Recommendation letters, if required, should come from a current professor, supervisor or academic advisor.

As a global institution, Carnegie Mellon values intercultural experiences gained when students participate in education abroad; however, international travel does have risk. OIE staff balance the benefits of these experiences with specific risk factors when advising and funding travel abroad.

OIE does not typically fund, or support, travel to countries where the U.S. State Department has a Level 3 or Level 4 Travel Advisory in effect. In cases where a Level 3 Travel Advisory is location-specific within a country, the support requests will be reviewed by the university on a case-by-case basis.
